What is speech therapy?

Our dedicated and experienced speech therapists are healthcare professionals, educated in the evaluation and treatment of both children and adults living with speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing problems.

Our therapists address decreases in swallowing, cognitive, and/or communicative function following brain injury, stroke, and brain tumors, or coinciding progressive neurological conditions. They work hard to help our patients develop effective speaking and listening skills, improve loudness or quality of voice, preserve the pleasures associated with eating, or re-train cognitive skills, such as memory and word-finding.

Some of the most common conditions that our speech therapists work with regarding the improvement of speech and swallowing disorders include:

  • Receptive, expressive, or pragmatic language delays in children
  • Dysphasia (language deficiencies and difficulty with comprehension)
  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • ALS
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke

How will speech therapy improve a speech or swallowing disorder in myself or a loved one?

Just like muscles of the body need strengthening and coordination, so do the muscles of the tongue and throat to make proper speech. Our speech therapists use neurological exercises and speech exercises to help patients with a wide array of speech/language difficulties. They also work to improve understanding, pronunciation, and forming of speech, in order to improve communication, socialization, and independence.

Our speech therapists also commonly work with dysphagia, or swallowing disorders. There are many actions, which have to occur in the mouth and throat in order for us to normally chew and swallow our food/drink. Because of this, dysphagia can occur at different stages of the swallowing process.

Our speech therapists work closely with you to determine the limitations during the swallowing process and to develop the appropriate treatment plan that will ensure the necessary intake of food and liquids. They will help the patient work toward strengthening and improving coordination of the tongue, mouth, and throat, in order to facilitate normal chewing and swallowing habits.
